Student Affinity Groups Foster a Sense of Belonging

In middle school, we know that it is important for students to feel a sense of belonging. Having a safe space for students to come together and be able to connect with peers who share similar backgrounds and experiences not only fosters community but it also fosters a stronger sense of belonging, emotional well-being, and confidence. 

At CDS, affinity groups play a pivotal role in supporting our students' overall development, because the forum allows them to connect and collaborate with others in a meaningful and productive way, as they begin to navigate the complexities of the world around them.

In addition to personal growth, our affinity spaces facilitate skill development. Students are supported in acquiring enhanced leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills as they work together to plan events, have difficult discussions, and explore their community. Students are given the freedom to ask questions, explore belief systems and build a network of peers to support them as they acquire the necessary social and emotional skills to thrive in middle school and beyond. Affinity groups at CDS provide a holistic experience that fosters personal growth, emotional intelligence, and a strong sense of community. 

The benefits of the skills developed in an affinity group extend well beyond middle school. We believe in student agency and want our students to feel empowered to take an active role in their own learning and personal development. In doing so, they will become more self-directed, motivated, and confident in their academic journeys.
