This year, CDS initiated a strategic partnership with Cristo Rey High School in Oakland, and we have four students joining us in a work/study program.
They are currently working with students on the yard and supporting teachers in the classroom one to two days a week. They also lend a hand in the CDS Community Library, and we hope to expand their roles into first-level tech support.
One of our first grade teachers said, "Our student associate loves to do read-alouds and often shares her high school experiences with our students. She is connecting with the kids in unique ways." Another teacher expressed their appreciation: "In the beginning of the year, our student associate brought in a Share Bag like the rest of our students and also made a puzzle piece to be a part of our Classroom Flag. We love having her as part of our classroom community!
And it's not just in the classroom where the interns are contributing to school life. Earlier this week one of our student associates proudly demonstrated her soccer skills, playing a fun one-on-one game with Enrique, a member of the CDS facilities team. The preschool students were incredibly engaged as they cheered on the match, and were then invited to practice. Soon students and teachers alike were joining in the soccer fun.
